Before diving into the complex eight-character diagram, we must first understand the basic elements that build this system: yin and yang and the five elements. It's like learning the basics of 0s and 1s before learning how to program a computer.

In Western cultural cognition, people are more familiar with the "four elements" (wind, fire, water, and earth). The five-phase system in the East is similar to this, but more emphasis is placed on the "flow" and "transformation" of energy. In fact, the word "line" in Chinese originally means "walking" or "running", referring to the five energy states of motion, rather than the five stationary substances.

Yin-Yang: Dual Opposition and Unity

Yin and Yang are not just symbols representing black and white, they are two forms of the existence of all things in the universe.

  • Sun: stands for active, bright, outwardly expanding, masculine, sun. In terms of personality, people with strong positivity are usually direct, outgoing, and active, but they are also prone to impatience.
  • Yin: stands for static, hidden, converging inward, feminine, moon. People with strong negativity tend to be deep, sensitive, good at planning, but also prone to negativity.

In the eight characters, all elements are divided into yin and yang. For example, the same element as "wood", "yang wood" is a big tree, and "yin wood" is a flower. Trees are wind-resistant but easily broken, and flowers and grasses are delicate but adaptable to the environment. When you understand Yin and Yang, you understand the rigidity and softness in your personality.

The Five Elements: Five Mental and Energy Archetypes

The conjunction between the five elements is the core logic of the eight-character analysis. Each element represents a specific psychological trait and area of life:

  1. Wood - stands for growth and benevolence and symbolizes the power of spring and upward movement. People with strong wood attributes often have aggressive and benevolent traits, but if unbalanced, can manifest as anger and lack of flexibility.
  2. Fire - represents passion and etiquette symbolizing the power of summer and diffusion. People with strong fire attributes are enthusiastic, polite, and expressive, but if they are unbalanced, they are prone to anxiety and even loss of control.
  3. Earth - represents stability and credibility and symbolizes the power of the seasons and the earth. People with strong earth attributes are honest, steady, and tolerant, but if they are unbalanced, they will appear stubborn, overly worried, or lazy.
  4. Gold - represents the power of determination and righteousness to symbolize autumn and convergence. Metallic people are decisive, righteous, and minimalist, but can become cold, sad, or overly picky if unbalanced.
  5. Water - represents wisdom and flow symbolizing the power of winter and sinking. People with strong water attributes are intelligent and adaptable, but if they are unbalanced, they are easily emotional, lack principles, or are dominated by fear.

Symbiosis vs. Symbiosis: The Nature of Relationships

The five elements do not exist in isolation, they interact all the time, and this interaction defines our relationships and fortunes.

one type isMutual Engender(ing)Relationships: wood produces fire, fire produces earth, native gold, gold produces water, and aquatic wood. This represents support, nourishment, and maternal commitment.
The other ismutual overcomingRelationships: Muk Tu, Turk Water, Shui Kuei, Hui Keke Jin, Jin Kemu. This represents control, pressure, challenge and discipline.

Application Example: Finding a Balanced Clearance Password

For example, if the element representing yourself is “weak wood” and your eight letters are filled with “gold”. Kim is kemu, which means that you will feel tremendous pressure, which may come from your career or health. However, in the five-phase relationship, water can dissolve the sharpness of gold and turn to nourish wood (because gold produces water and aquatic wood).

In this case, "water" becomes the passcode in your destiny, the term is called "using God". In real life, this could mean that when you feel overwhelmed at work, you need to learn, rest, or seek help from a mentor (these are images of water), rather than pushing back.

Understanding the five elements is essentially understanding how to deploy the energy resources in your life, so that the system shifts from the conflict of "reciprocity" to the smooth flow of "symbiosis".
